Carlos Spottorno & Guillermo Abril – The Crack
November 2017 · book reviews, published in PHOTONEWS 11/2017 and CAMERA AUSTRIA No. 140
In times in which the events of the world reach us continuously and in every place, it is becoming increasingly difficult to filter information according to its importance, to understand its complexity and to do justice to its respective meaning. Therefore it is not surprising that even photojournalism, which is otherwise less inclined to experiment and ultimately also adheres to a journalistic code of ethics, is looking for new ways of reporting and opening up to alternative forms of narration and presentation.
This is also the case in the publication The Crack by the Spanish journalist duo Carlos Spottorno and Guillermo Abril, which is an extraordinary synthesis of photo reportage and graphic novel. In an entertaining way, the two authors manage to relate complex socio-political developments and to condense the information that is fragmented in our everyday news consumption. The Crack is a journalistic analysis, interpretation, classification - and contemporary document of a Europe in transition.
