Pepa Hristova – Sworn Virgins
May 2013 · texts for the book, published by Kehrer
In the north of Albania, in the “Cursed Mountains”, which are said to have been created by the devil, still live the Sworn Virgins - the last man-women in Europe.
An orally handed down collection of laws from the Middle Ages, the "Kanun", allows families who have lost their male head - often through blood revenge - to appoint a woman from their relatives as their representative. The prerequisite, however, is that she takes an irrevocable vow: she must swear to keep her virginity forever. These so-called oath virgins, called "Burrnesha" in the local language, are respected in families and given the status of men.
